ITFARM: research on the current state of Digital Farming in Europe

The ITFARM consortium has published the research summary report on the current state of Digital Farming in Europe, based on the findings of the surveys with farmers and ICT technology manufacturers, dealers and distributors in each partner country.

The report summarises the main data obtained from the desk and field-based research, which investigated the current level of application and demand of IT in the agricultural sector, with the aim to identify the current constraints and opportunities for Smart Farming and have a general overview of suitable technologies and equipment available on the market.

The results show that the digital transformation process is yet to come in SMEs operating in agriculture. The majority of the interviewees make little or no use of digital technologies not only because the machines are expensive and not affordable but mostly because farmers lack the ICT skills needed to use these technologies.

To overcome these problems, the ITFARM project intends to provide new educational opportunities on integrated digitization of business processes, following the new developments of Agriculture 4.0. Based on the findings of the transnational research, partners will develop an e-learning platform to support owners, managers and employees of farms to introduce and use ICT in their activities. The project will also offer extensive training to VET teachers and to students that aspire to become farmers.

The fourth agricultural revolution is coming

After the start of work on the project in January 2022, the partners met several times online because the corona crisis did not allow direct contacts. It was not until April that a face-to-face meeting was possible. At the time of the meeting, the conclusions from the initial research had already been drawn up, so the meeting could focus on the methodological aspects of creating educational materials. The meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere, the partners were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful environment of the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague.
